Passion Book Report

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I have read countless books about career and calling but after a while they have become a bit repetitive. I keep reading — looking for that one special piece of inspiration that I can pass on to my clients and coaches and I am happy to report that I found one such evergreen book last year: The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson.

The author who is a world renowned education consultant is someone I met through a TED conference video that a friend sent a while back and I must say I felt a kinship with him immediately. You can see this inspiring talk here:

 .

In his wonderful book he tells more stories of people who have found their element while he offers concrete advice for how you can do the same. He defines one’s element as the meeting point between natural aptitude and personal passion. His writing style is fun without being light– as he offers a blend of theory and practical advice. He also offers a hypothesis I resonate with. Schools often squelch a child’s gifts with an outdated and narrow curriculum and we need to help all children and adults recognize their own “element”.

If you are looking for hope for finding your own passions, buy this book!

Every now and again a new technology emerges that alters the way the world works. The first Mac back in the 80’s, Google in the 90’s and now this. This will either leave you feeling excited at the possibilities or even possibly terrified! Either way – this is an amazing leap forward in the world of technology and something that everyone should witness.

Absolutely amazing bike tricks!

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I remember when I was a kid I used to love bikes and especially BMX. I would spend days and nights learning how to wheelie, bunny hop and jump over things using make shift ramps. I loved riding but I was always under the impression that the hours I spent learning new stunts and tricks was time wasted and that if I wanted to get on in life I should have spent my free time studying more (and playing less)

So let me introduce you to Danny MacAskill. Not only does he make a living from “messing around on his bike” but this guy has taken the art of trick riding to a level that renders people speechless.

Prepare to be amazed  – this is one guy who definitely didn’t listen to his teachers!

A fantastic example of remaing true to your values

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I have long been a fan of Woot – a company that sells just one thing a day very, very cheaply. They have always been a little Maverick and a touch anarchic….so when they got bought by Amazon many people felt they had sold out.

This video is a fantastic example of how marketing and communications has changed through the use of the web and social media.

Well done to everyone at Woot – you deserve a well earned break.

Steve Jobs’ on the importance of finding your passion

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Are you a Mac or a PC? This is question has been discussed for years over blogs, in bars and even in the offices of Three Giant Leaps. Personally, I prefer PC’s but for many years I have admired Apple products for their design, functions and the sheer love that is lavished on every single product they make. Apple are pioneers in their field and had Bill Gates not spent a year working at Apple only to brazenly copy their Operating System and create Windows, then perhaps 95% of you who are reading this now would be doing so through a Mac instead of a PC,

Steve Jobs pioneered the way software and hardware worked together, turned the music industry on its head, changed the way music is consumed and revolutionized the wireless industry.

What is also kinda interesting is that Steve Jobs never graduated college.

Here is a video of  Steve Jobs Stanford Commencement Address that took place in 2005.  His vision, drive and raw enthusiasm for pursuing a path that he was passionate about is an amazing example of the incredible potential a person can realize if they take the leap and follow their heart.
